North Carolina Under Insured Motorist Coverage

Under Insured Motorist Coverage (UIM): Insurance you buy in case the at fault driver does not have enough liability coverage. Your insurance owes you the difference between the amount of available liability and under insured coverage. You don’t have UIM on a minimum policy because it is a minimum. Example at fault driver has 30k liability and you have 50k liability/UIM. Total possible insurance recovery is 30k from at fault driver and 20k from your own UIM. UM coverage, uninsured motorist is coverage you buy if someone hits you and they don’t have insurance.
